In this class series we will address various Functional themes that are of particular interest in the work with children. We will use short ATMs, short video clips of myself or of Dr. Feldenkrais working, functional strategies, movement observation, lecture and group Q&A to explore various themes. You will also be assigned a few of Dr. Feldenkrais’s lessons to watch outside of class time. We will discuss these lessons together, highlighting particular aspects of each one.
We will clarify the general sequence of development and come to a better understanding of what each new variation contributes to the overall abilities of the person. This will include a discussion of reflexes and what it means when a medical person says that the child is stuck in the reflexes.
We will address the question of when to follow a developmental sequence and when not to follow it. Dr. Feldenkrais himself said different things about this issue at different times.
We will identify ways of having the same Functional conversation with the child in many positions or situations.
We will explore accessing the nervous system through the skeleton, through the muscles, and through the environment. This includes the notion of turning down the noise in the system so the learning can land.
