Working With Infants and Children: A Six-week Online Course with Feldenkrais Trainer Arlyn Zones — Starting Jan 2021

December 15, 2020 by Sonja Sutherland

In this class series we will address various Functional themes that are of particular interest in the work with children. We will use short ATMs, short video clips of myself or of Dr. Feldenkrais working, functional strategies, movement observation, lecture and group Q&A to explore various themes. You will also be assigned a few of Dr. Feldenkrais’s lessons to watch outside of class time. We will discuss these lessons together, highlighting particular aspects of each one.

We will clarify the general sequence of development and come to a better understanding of what each new variation contributes to the overall abilities of the person. This will include a discussion of reflexes and what it means when a medical person says that the child is stuck in the reflexes.

We will address the question of when to follow a developmental sequence and when not to follow it. Dr. Feldenkrais himself said different things about this issue at different times.

We will identify ways of having the same Functional conversation with the child in many positions or situations.

We will explore accessing the nervous system through the skeleton, through the muscles, and through the environment. This includes the notion of turning down the noise in the system so the learning can land.

There are two sessions. You may choose either the Tuesday option or the Sunday option. Enrollment is limited to 30 attendees for each session.

  • Session 1: Tuesdays, Jan. 19-Feb. 23, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. PST
  • Session 2: Sundays, Jan. 24-Feb. 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. PST

Quiet The Noise: Sunday Nov 8 – 10:30am – 12:30pm

Strategies for Reducing Anxiety During These Turbulent Times

In this workshop, using iconic Feldenkrais lessons, Mary will share her experience and thinking on how to live fully and be present with ourselves and others during these strange times.

Come Join us for this Online Workshop!

Pre-registration Required

We are living in turbulent and challenging times. It may even seem that we have no control over what’s happening in our lives and our environment- and that we are at the mercy of unsettling events, ambiguity, perceptions, ideas and the dictates of others. However- we are able to find hope: that we are able to take care of ourselves and find ways to mitigate the stress and anxiety that have become the reality for many of us.

My own journey is ongoing and I wish to share my experiences with you. Acceptance of what IS was my first step. That took months of self-inquiry and looking clearly at my reality. Appreciation, gratitude, kindness towards myself and others and compassion for all of us has become my template on how to deal with our uncertain existence. It has been a daily and -even hourly- challenge.

As Feldenkrais teachers especially, we are fortunate to have the greatest tool: awareness! and-learning. I am learning to notice and change my reaction to events and situations to which seemingly, I have no control.  Then the question becomes-what can I do for myself and others?  And- importantly- what tools do we have- as humans, and Feldenkrais teachers, to help ourselves and others?   We have the ability and the in-depth training- to feel, sense, think and act. In this workshop, using iconic Feldenkrais lessons, I will share my experience and thinking on how to live fully and be present with ourselves and others during these strange times.

— Mary Spire

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with fellow teachers, share your experiences and to recalibrate to better deal with the challenges we face now.

Mary Spire is an experienced teacher and trainer of the Feldenkrais Method ®. A Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, she has been actively teaching since graduating in 1987 from the Feldenkrais Foundation Training and, for the last 18 years, has served as a trainer and educational director in Feldenkrais® Professional Training Programs worldwide. Her passion is sharing her knowledge and expertise with others; she loves helping others to improve their lives and functioning and, in the words of Dr. Feldenkrais, to realize their “avowed and un-avowed dreams.”

Mary holds a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California. As a musician, she brings to her practice first-hand knowledge of the challenges and difficulties that performers face.

She has taught Feldenkrais to musicians at the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. San Francisco, Boston University, McGill University, State University of New York, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Mary also taught the Feldenkrais Method ® at the San Francisco Symphony’s successful Prevention & Wellness Program for 18 years. She has presented and taught aspects of the Method in hospitals and to hospital staff, including those of the Physical Therapy Department at UCSF School of Medicine.

In addition to offering frequent workshops, lectures and symposia, Mary maintains private practices in Berkeley and San Rafael, California, where she not only offers group classes, but also specializes in working one-on-one with infants and children, older adults, people with neurological conditions and performing artists.

Exploring ATM as Self FI with Deborah Bowes, DPT, GCFT
FGNA sponsored Continuing Education for Feldenkrais Practitioners

Watch the recorded session below

Awareness through Movement and Functional Integration are complementary processes. In this class, you will explore ‘tweaking’ an ATM to give yourself the Functional Integration lesson you would like to have. You’ll use your own hands to touch, support, and bring awareness to the jaw, throat and facial expression. It’s like a Feldenkrais facelift! You will gain insight and ideas that you can bring into your practice with your students…whenever we will be able to get back to that! In the meantime, you can care for yourself and then, teach your clients to do the same!

Deborah Bowes, Feldenkrais Trainer, has been teaching in Feldenkrais Trainings for over 28 years and been in private practice over 33 years. She teaches and lectures a lot, in person, and online for Feldenkrais groups and other organizations. Out of a need to reduce the habitual tension in her face and jaw, she has used these processes for her own self-care and wants to share with you so that you can do the same.
