Quiet The Noise: Sunday Nov 8 – 10:30am – 12:30pm

October 1, 2020 by Sonja Sutherland

Strategies for Reducing Anxiety During These Turbulent Times

In this workshop, using iconic Feldenkrais lessons, Mary will share her experience and thinking on how to live fully and be present with ourselves and others during these strange times.

Come Join us for this Online Workshop!

Pre-registration Required

We are living in turbulent and challenging times. It may even seem that we have no control over what’s happening in our lives and our environment- and that we are at the mercy of unsettling events, ambiguity, perceptions, ideas and the dictates of others. However- we are able to find hope: that we are able to take care of ourselves and find ways to mitigate the stress and anxiety that have become the reality for many of us.

My own journey is ongoing and I wish to share my experiences with you. Acceptance of what IS was my first step. That took months of self-inquiry and looking clearly at my reality. Appreciation, gratitude, kindness towards myself and others and compassion for all of us has become my template on how to deal with our uncertain existence. It has been a daily and -even hourly- challenge.

As Feldenkrais teachers especially, we are fortunate to have the greatest tool: awareness! and-learning. I am learning to notice and change my reaction to events and situations to which seemingly, I have no control.  Then the question becomes-what can I do for myself and others?  And- importantly- what tools do we have- as humans, and Feldenkrais teachers, to help ourselves and others?   We have the ability and the in-depth training- to feel, sense, think and act. In this workshop, using iconic Feldenkrais lessons, I will share my experience and thinking on how to live fully and be present with ourselves and others during these strange times.

— Mary Spire

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with fellow teachers, share your experiences and to recalibrate to better deal with the challenges we face now.

Mary Spire is an experienced teacher and trainer of the Feldenkrais Method ®. A Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, she has been actively teaching since graduating in 1987 from the Feldenkrais Foundation Training and, for the last 18 years, has served as a trainer and educational director in Feldenkrais® Professional Training Programs worldwide. Her passion is sharing her knowledge and expertise with others; she loves helping others to improve their lives and functioning and, in the words of Dr. Feldenkrais, to realize their “avowed and un-avowed dreams.”

Mary holds a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California. As a musician, she brings to her practice first-hand knowledge of the challenges and difficulties that performers face.

She has taught Feldenkrais to musicians at the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. San Francisco, Boston University, McGill University, State University of New York, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Mary also taught the Feldenkrais Method ® at the San Francisco Symphony’s successful Prevention & Wellness Program for 18 years. She has presented and taught aspects of the Method in hospitals and to hospital staff, including those of the Physical Therapy Department at UCSF School of Medicine.

In addition to offering frequent workshops, lectures and symposia, Mary maintains private practices in Berkeley and San Rafael, California, where she not only offers group classes, but also specializes in working one-on-one with infants and children, older adults, people with neurological conditions and performing artists.

Christine Germain
I have been doing Feldenkrais since 2002 as part of my dance training in Quebec, Canada. I became a Guild member in 2013 after I graduated from Berkeley 7 training, directed by Dennis Leri and Carol Kress. I have had the honour and privilege to work in Sports and Dance Medicine at St-Francis Memorial hospital in San Francisco, with SF Giants baseball player Hunter Pence, in rehab at the Performance Medicine department of  Cirque du Soleil, and at The Berkeley Rep School of Theatre where I still teach workshops. I am also a choreographer and use the Feldenkrais Method principles as part of my dance research and performance. I feel so lucky to be co-representing our region along with Sonja H Sutherland, and I hope to serve you in the best possible way! Thank you!
